I've decided that in the face of ignorance about Communication, that its high time I keep a running dialog about Communication and all the things that are involved in it and that which is not but should be.
I'm not a college professor and I don't think it would be useful to present my thoughts exactly as one might...instead I'll just add the muse as it suits to present itself like the first contribution I have here for you today:
A friend recently asked me if my kids were as intelligent as myself...and I did what's called a double-take because I'm not in the habit of boasting, and frankly I really don't care if someone thinks I'm intelligent or not...opinions are like pie holes and I have plenty of my own and that doesn't necessarily make me intelligent in any sense of the term...in this case rather than use it as an example of any level of intelligence, I'll offer it here to illustrate what is wrong with our society as a whole and that NO ONE IS IMMUNE to it no matter how much you remove yourself to try for a little insulation against it....
My kids are homeschooled. We are practicing phonics and three letter word building on the big chalkboard on the wall in front of the dining room table. I have the avid attention and participation of all three of the youngest...She is 4years old who is doing all the 1st grade level activities with the same acumen as her just turned 6 year old twin brothers.
So we're running through three letter word building using the base "at" and they are building words using any possible letter in the alphabet except vowels from the vowel list and the rule is that it only counts if the word formed makes a word we use when speaking with each other...meaningless phonagrams don't count.
So after running through the letters h, c, m, f, and capital N, we finally arrive at using the letter "b" to form the word "bat" and just to be certain that the kids fully understand what a "bat" is and that it is something we use in real life and can use in speaking with each other, (remember this accented part of the parameters here)....
.... I thus ask my daughter, "what is a bat?" and I'm standing there waiting for a description of playing bat & ball, a theoretically universal American childhood game for children that they themselves enjoy on occasion!
...instead what I get is this quote, "Oh! I know! Something to beat people with."
My jaw hit the floor. From the mouths of babes. Welcome to Earth third rock from the Sun.
how do we go about changing perversion this pervasive?
Maybe you can pawn this off as an honest mistake that she didn't really understand the set parameters for the activity; that it has to be a thing defined as "used in speaking with each other." But I'll offer you just one more piece of insight that this particular four year old can indeed understand what falls under the heading of Communication and that violence is included.
That piece I refer to is a small disertation she made to her father just yesterday on what constitutes Responsibility in the most matter of fact voice you can imagine, and what responsibility with regards to keeping her own bedroom clean is actually applicable to herself who shares it with her older sister.
You see it's a matter of fact according to her that 'older sister' is the responsible party not herself, because 'older sister' is always required to clean the bedroom when Miss little sister refuses under the auspices of being only four and therefore not able, due to her age, to complete such a huge project all on her own.
The concept of Responsibility, what it is, and how it is applied is not so different from Communication in our household. They are two concepts that are inter-twinned and used connectively in her experience. If you don't think you should be held accountable for something or have a part in being responsible for something, the way you Communicate that in her world is to pitch a fit, kick, scream, throw something at someone, hit, occasionally bite, and explain to Daddy with great maturity in her manner how her world works and what he already knows is the case by using Daddy's level of language because Daddy doesn't like chaos and comes unglued over it usually siding with her. And since it works 90% of the time, it is therefore TRUE.
So yes, dear reader by the definition of a four-year old within the span of a small series of family interactions all occuring in a 24 hour period depicting that she is indeed able to comprehend what real Communication is in our society and how it is effectively if not properly employed. And that her description of how a bat can and is used in our society is a truth qualifying as a correct answer under the parameters I gave; one that has real applications in Communication.
I thought I'd share that with you, considering the recent verbal violence in the course of communications between mulitple parties on a neighboring forum over the last several days. Most of the readers here are well aware of what I'm pointing out wrt that event. Violence in any form constitutes Communication. We adults use it on each other all the time in various forms and the rest of society goes on about its business silently condoning it by the credence they give it by not correcting it. When this is the society status quo and behavior of this level is treated as normal, how could even my own daughter not think this is wholly acceptable behavior for Communication and what constitutes the tools, choices, and courses of such?
Yes indeed. From the mouths of babes. Welcome to Earth third rock from the Sun. The most meaningful truths in our world are not nearly as complicated as we make them out to be.
And sometimes we already possess the things we need to know, but when we don't deal with it not only do we have to at some point live with the consequences, but also eventually hearing about it from other parties.
It is repeatedly said by many sources that ET continues to ask us to stop the wars. ET doesn't specify which wars or what manner we wage them in. The message is universal. Everything is on the table.
